Spot the Dot App–Reviewed

Spot the Dot from Ruckus Media is the first app that I’m having the privilege of reviewing on my iPad 2, and it does not disappoint.  Spot the Dot is an interactive book app from author David A Carter.  The book has 10 “chapters” which each introduce a different coloreimaged dot, which is hidden on the page in some way.  While some page, you simply look for it, in a screen full of different colors and shapes, on others, you have to search for it, almost like a pop-up book flipping areas of the page, or moving things around, simply to find the colored dot you’re meant to find.  Spot the Dot is really paving the way for the pop-up book of the 21st century, and as corny as that sounds, its executed with excellence.

Features

• The first app by David A. Carter, whose hugely popular “Bugs in a Box” series has sold 6.5 million copies worldwide, brilliantly translates his complex paper sculptures for the touch screen.
• Bright, bold graphics teach young children colors and shapes.
• This “I Spy” type of search-and-find game engages children as they hunt for the missing dot.
• The dots’ locations are randomized ensuring that each play produces a different experience.
• Each level gets progressively more challenging and complex.
• A gentle, encouraging voice-over offers instructions, guidance and praise.
• Each level introduces a new activity: in one, players use a finger to move a spotlight around a dark screen until they find the correct dot; in another, shapes “pop” and are transformed into different shapes.
• Optional teaching tips provide parents with additional ideas for how to extend the lessons to include counting or shapes.

Commentary

The thing I enjoy about Spot the Dot, is that is contains every high mark that I’m looking for in an app for my daughter and in an app that I’d suggest to other parents.  It helps to educate children (toddlers) that are just learning their colors and shapes, and helps incorporate a little fine motor skill when it comes to finding the dots.  On top of the educational value, its one of those rare apps that has staying power, and that kids will come back to and play time and time again.  As the dot is never in the same place twice, its always a fresh challenge, and one that progressively gets more challenging as they go to the next “dot quest.”  Finally, its an app that I can sit and play with my Bug.  I’ll admit that at 2, some of the later “chapters” can be a bit more challenging for her, but are perfect for her and I to play together.  Don’t miss understand, this app is geared perfectly for toddlers, especially ones that are getting familiar with colors, and enjoys a good challenge.  So if you’re looking for a fun, educational app, that not only your child will enjoy but you as well, and one that won’t be skipped over after a few times of playing, then Spot the Dot is a can’t miss app.  While its priced a little higher then some other apps you could buy, its definitely one that’s worth the money I feel.  Best of all, there is a FREE “Lite” version, giving you the chance to try it out before purchasing the full app. (Link)

Spot the Dot is the first app to get a perfect score from me, and I truly feel its deserving of it.
